This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

This role supports the development and operations of a common battery for use by multiple Blue Origin business units, including New Glenn and Lunar.

As part of a small, hard-working, and accomplished team of experts, you will be integral in the development, qualification, and production of battery hardware products in support of multiple missions. Your primary technical responsibility is for the mechanical design of the battery module, pack components, system integration with other multi-functional teams. You will also be responsible for component, module, and subsystem level validation as well as introducing the design to volume production.

§ 02RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • As the Lead Mechanical Engineer, you are responsible for the mechanical aspects of the battery design, development, qualification, and hardware production. You will:
  • Develop and maintain a full system design and its associated documentation (CAD, drawings, ICDs, BOMs, etc.)
  • Develop mechanical components for the battery system, including modules, pack assemblies, interconnects, electrical components, structural components, and enclosures from concept, through qualification, and into production.
  • Use structural and thermal analyses, as well as Thermal Runaway (TR) Passive Propagation Resistance (PPR) testing, to inform battery design decisions.
  • Develop production processes for module build, through pack assembly, and end of line acceptance testing.
  • Work closely with the program and manufacturing management team through build, test, and delivery of flight hardware.
  • Support the development of the Automated Test Equipment for acceptance and qualification testing.
  • Support the successful qualification of the hardware.
  • Support integration into the vehicle and assist in solving and vehicle integration.

§ 03MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • 6+ years of direct experience in battery development; 3+ year in space applications desired
  • Direct experience with Battery Mechanical Design, Test, and Manufacturing (or similar electrical power equipment); familiarity with lithium-ion batteries, TR PPR design approaches, and battery test methods.
  • Experience creating fabrication and installation drawings, including GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and tolerance stack up analyses.
  • Experience specifying and justifying margins and test sequences for aerospace systems.
  • Desire to work hands-on, both independently and as part of a team, throughout the development and production phases of the mechanical assembly product lifecycle.
  • Experience providing technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of collaboration and inclusion.
  • Highly organized teammate with excellent technical written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to travel to and work at remote sites supporting test integration, commissioning, and training.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
§ 04PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • M.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field.
  • Experience using structural and thermal analysis, as well as TR PPR testing, to guide designs.
  • Experience in development of launch vehicles.
  • Experience with human spaceflight or high-performance aircraft systems.
  • Experience with DOORS, CREO, Windchill, ANSYS, Thermal Desktop.

Compensation Range for:

CO applicants is $133,500.00 - $186,898.95 WA applicants is $145,188.00 - $203,263.20
