Process Safety Engineer (Power Plant)
SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
The Memphis Environmental Health & Safety team is seeking a highly driven engineer to establish process safety parameters across power generation systems and supporting utilities. A successful engineer in this role will thrive in a high-paced collaborative environment and serve as a process safety SME with operations, engineering, and construction stakeholders at our Memphis power plant and related facilities.
- Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) of power generation systems, fuel gas, steam, and chemical utilities, and recommend controls to manage risks as low as reasonably practicable
- Evaluate equipment overpressure/overtemperature scenarios, including boilers, heat recovery systems, turbines, pressure vessels, and relief systems
- Perform/oversee Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), risk assessments, and hazard analyses on complex process and power plant equipment
- Implement and field-validate safety-critical instruments and interlocks during Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs) as new generating units and supporting systems come online
- Implement a Process Safety Management (PSM) program and ensure compliance with all applicable pillars of PSM
- Support commissioning and startup of new power generation facilities and major capital projects in Memphis
- Partner with operations, maintenance, and construction teams to identify and mitigate process safety risks during both ongoing operations and facility build-out
- Utilization of quality and risk tools such as root cause analysis and corrective action, HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA/PFMEA, control plans, and structured problem-solving
- Utilization of process modeling tools such as Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, and/or Aspen Dynamics
- Bachelor’s degree in process safety, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or an engineering discipline
- 3+ years of experience with design, commissioning, or process safety of power generation, utilities, or high-hazard process systems
- Master’s degree in chemical engineering
- Master’s degree in chemical or mechanical engineering
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, single-line diagrams, equipment datasheets, and instrumentation diagrams
- Experience with reviewing safety control circuits and calculating safety performance levels (SIL/SIS)
- Experience with design, commissioning, or PHA of power plant systems such as fuel gas, boilers/HRSGs, steam turbines, high-energy piping, hydrogen, ammonia, water treatment, and bulk chemical storage
- Advanced understanding of industry codes, standards, and practices such as ASME, NFPA, ANSI, IBC/IFC, RAGAGEP, and applicable OSHA PSM / EPA RMP requirements
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
- Enthusiasm for supporting high-reliability power generation that enables mission-critical operations
- This is not a remote or hybrid position and will require relocation if not already local to the Memphis, TN area
- Position occasionally requires the ability to work extended hours and weekends when needed, including during outages, commissioning, and facility startups
- To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
